A Tribute to Our Founder
Brigadier (R) Muhammad Aslam Khan
Shangrila Resort Skardu stands today not only as a symbol of serenity and hospitality, but as a living tribute to the courage, leadership, and vision of its founder, Brigadier (R) Muhammad Aslam Khan.
Before he became a pioneer of tourism in Skardu, Brigadier Aslam Khan played a defining role in the history of the Northern Areas during the events of 1947–48. As a young military officer, he was involved in the operations that secured Skardu and the surrounding region for Pakistan during the first Indo-Pakistan conflict. In unforgiving terrain and under severe logistical challenges, he demonstrated remarkable resilience, strategic discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty.
The successful defense and liberation of the region ensured that the majestic mountains and valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan became part of Pakistan’s national landscape. His service reflected not only military competence, but profound patriotism and sacrifice.
Years later, Brigadier Aslam Khan returned to this very land — not in uniform, but as a visionary determined to build peace, opportunity, and pride. In 1983, along the serene shores of Lower Kachura Lake, he founded Shangrila, inspired by the mythical paradise described in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon.
At a time when Skardu had minimal tourism infrastructure and limited global visibility, he saw what others could not — the potential for this region to become a world-class destination. Through determination and foresight, he laid the foundation for sustainable tourism in the area and helped introduce Skardu to travelers from across Pakistan and beyond.
He believed that service to the nation extends beyond defense — it continues through development, employment creation, and preserving natural heritage. Shangrila became his contribution to economic growth, community empowerment, and national pride.

His Message for the Future of Pakistan
Brigadier Aslam Khan believed deeply in the promise of Pakistan and the strength of its people. He would often emphasize that a nation thrives when its citizens lead with discipline, integrity, and unity.
His message for future generations:
“Pakistan was built through sacrifice and resilience. Protect it with integrity, strengthen it hard work, and unite for its progress. Let your character be your greatest asset, and let your actions honor the land you stand upon.”
⸻
His Vision for the Future of Tourism
He firmly believed that tourism is a bridge between nations and a gateway to understanding.
“Preserve the beauty of our mountains, welcome the world with dignity, and build tourism with responsibility — for when we protect our heritage, we strengthen Pakistan’s future.”
Today, Shangrila Resort Skardu stands as a reflection of that enduring vision — a legacy of service to our country and leadership in enterprise.
With pride, gratitude, and lasting respect,
